Petr Kousal became the winner of the Kaplicky Internship, which supports students of architecture. The reward is a three-month internship in the Adjaye Associates in London. The program for young promising architects is organized by the Bakala Foundation in cooperation with the London Design Museum and the Kaplicky Center Foundation.

As a newly graduated student of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Technical University in Brno he took the jury by designing a pavilion in Brno fairs.

Petr worked on a scale, which was for one person quite astonishing to me. He chose a relatively complex project, which he managed to handle in all its aspects, professionally and in detail designed not only the pavilion with new entrance itself but also its functioning within the extensive exhibition grounds and the city plan, which provoked to think,

The representative pre-space of the historical entrance will be restored to a full public space. The value of the public space is not only the area itself, but also the surrounding buildings. In this case, it is an administrative building with a semi-circular representative entrance. Significant pavilion A, the pavilion of the city of Brno, etc.

The future opportunities of the Brno Exhibition Center in this specific area of the city

Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic. It is located in the central part of Europe, and within a distance of two hundred kilometers there are other important European capitals: Prague, Vienna and Bratislava. The Brno Exhibition Center (BVV) is inherently a part of the city’s organism. Although it stretches across an area of 650 thousand square metres it by no means blemishes the beautiful natural environment of the Pisárky valley. The exhibition site was founded in 1928 following the designs produced by the most reputable Czech and Moravian functionalist architects. It is located about 2 km southwest of the center of Brno. Along with the elegant Villa Tugendhat, the most famous building from this period, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the modernist architecture of the Brno Exhibition Centre manifested the new identity of Czechoslovak society with the spirit of modern ideas and technological progress. At the present time, the area looks like a large impassable block. The pedestrian problem is the absolute imperviousness of the site in the transverse direction, especially to a sport recreational zone along the river Svratka. We can say it is the only valley with a natural bio-corridor in the center of Brno and after the reconstruction of the waterfront, the zone will be more open to the inhabitants, and the area of exhibiton centre should respond to the intervention.

The issue is also the outer transport network in the southern part of the premises. The Large City Circle Road in Brno after its completion will be one of the most important elements of the transport system of the city of Brno. The project includes, among other things, 27 interchanges, 1 intersection, 8 tunnels and 4 flyovers. In the given part of the complex there is an opportunity to re-form the existing economic part of the fairs. Monumentally protected pavilions in the exhibition venue do not meet the requirements for a high-quality indoor exhibition area today. An opportunity is to find other uses of given, especially due to architecturally valuable objects.

The aim is to create a compact linear park for recreation and relaxation, which goes towards the historic tower and the newly designed main entrance on the north historical axis. This park contains a trail for pedestrians, runners, cyclists and athletes on inline skating.

The assignment of the diploma project is based on the designed urban concept, which includes location of the pavilion in the western area, also the overall traffic solution, operational and functional use of the valley of Pisárky.

The south historical axis is also public, but unlike the north axis, which is more closed and based on cultural and recreational character, the south axis is designed for entertainment and shopping. Is leads to a multifuncional sports hall.

Creating a master plan to look to improve specific site in Brno

The aim of the urban concept was to make the perimeter accessible to the public to involve this area more in the city organism, on the other hand do not disturb the operation of the exhibition grounds in order BVV could develop itself and Brno could continue to be the main city of the fairs.

The proposal creates housing for families and students with services and crafts in the ground floor in the southern part of BVV. The aim is to revitalize the southern location. Identify the direct line between the city and sports recreation area.

The historical part around the pavilion A is opened to public and the fairs are concentrated around the pavilion Z, where a new city entrance is planned within a linear park along Hlinky Street. Also the new pavilion with the entrance and a superstructure with residence of BVV is planned.

The pedastrian footbridge does not limit the operation of BVV. It connects the Riviéra, the superstructure and the terminal Lipová.

The already constructed Prague Radial, the newest pavilion P and the most significant pavilion Z gave rise to concentrate the new pavilion and the fairs in the southwest area. The superstructure composed of the platform with storage of the fairs, fire station and large parking lot is also proposed in the southwest part. On the platform are designed administrative buildings and hotels. Congress centre is situated in the centre. The superstructure is forming the representative building of BVV, in addition to the important pavilion Z.

Terminal Lipova is a place with a concentration of students and a great connection to the city public transport. The urban main entrance is situated here, as well as the cableway terminal.

Newly, the terminal Lipová is designed with the cableway station, which is not only an attraction over the valley of Pisárky, but also represents a form of transport to the campus Bohunice and back to the trade fair center.

Developing of the new pavilion with new entrance

The proposed design of an exhibition pavilion is situated in western area of BVV. The large-scale pavilion is compositionally related to a significant pavillion Z and contains an exhibition hall and an entrance edifice directed on the pavilion Z. The entrance edifice in a central of the pavilion is surrounded by extensive exhibition area and its centre is plaza with natural woody plants, an colonnade and a restaurant.

A visitor goes from a superstructure through the plaza and descends on a monumental stairs into area of the fairs. In a secondary direction, the visitor descents from the plaza over each gallery to the exhibiton area. The entrance building is located in the middle, therefore it creates two identical exhibition halls and they can be used for totally different events.

Elevated plaza is central outdoor collecting space for visitors and exhibitors. Place of meeting point and rush, but also a place where visitors can stop and have a rest, surrounded by superstructure, pavilion Z and views into exhibiton halls.

Pavilion disposition and advantages

The proposed design offers to visitors and exhibitors not only a gathering outdoor relaxation area on the plaza and the restaurant with a specific view on the dominant-pavilion Z, but moreover interesting experiences from galleries. A disposition of the object is based on axial symmetry. The 2nd floor is especially proposed for congresses. The monumental staircase is projected to overall disposition of the pavilion.

Because the design creates the entry level on the 3rd floor, the total built area of the pavilion is almost equal to the exhibition area. The new building meets requirements of modern exhibitions and will be used for social, educational, cultural and sports events. The pavilion will be visited by inhabitents of all ages not only from Brno, from the near and distant surroundings, but also by visitors from abroad.

Entrance edifice with galleries is also an exhibition element in extensive exhibition hall. Pavilion is flexible and can be use also for balls and for another events with specific program.

View from the nearby pavilion Z on the monumental staircase and on the restaurant. This is the place where you, as a visitor, can enjoy a last coffee with the specific view on the dominant before leaving the BVV. Then you can go straight to the car park. Get in the car and leave the BVV full of new experiences, after the whole day spended on BVV. Leave a place where you will love to come back. Viva la Expo Brno, viva la!
